Weekend and substitute days

How NSW handles a holiday on a weekend

When Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls on a weekend, the weekend day stays a public holiday and a weekday is added. Anzac Day on a weekend gets no extra day under the Act, but NSW specially declared an additional day for 2026 (Monday 27 April) and 2027 (Monday 26 April). That is a one-off declaration, not a standing rule.

The Pricing Schedule counts a declared part-day as a public holiday, and says that where a support crosses between times of day or days of week and is delivered by a single worker, the higher of the amounts applies to the whole support. So a shift that runs into the declared hours is priced at the public holiday amount for its whole length. Record the approach in your service agreement.

The NDIS rule

How the NDIS defines a public holiday

From the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27, Part 4, Table 61 (Definitions of Time of Day and Day of Week).

Public holiday

Any of the following days

  • 1 January (New Year’s Day)
  • 26 January (Australia Day)
  • Good Friday
  • Easter Monday
  • 25 April (Anzac Day)
  • King’s birthday holiday (the day on which it is celebrated in a State or Territory or a region of a State or Territory)
  • 25 December (Christmas Day)
  • 26 December (Boxing Day)

“any other day or part-day declared as a public holiday within a State or Territory where the support is being delivered.”

Public Holiday Support

“Any support to a participant that starts at or after midnight on the night prior to a Public Holiday and ends before or at midnight of that Public Holiday (unless it is a Night-time Sleepover Support).”

Read the definitions in the NDIS Pricing Schedule 2026-27. Where a support crosses into or out of a public holiday and is delivered by a single worker, Part 1 of the Schedule says the higher of the amounts applies to the whole support.

Which days get the NDIS public holiday price

The NDIS does not keep its own holiday calendar. The Pricing Schedule names eight days (New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, the King’s Birthday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day), then adds any other day or part-day declared a public holiday in the state or territory where the support is delivered. So the state calendar decides, and it is where the support happens that counts, not where your office is.

Three things that catch providers out

  • Weekend Christmas and Boxing Day. Most states keep the weekend day and add a weekday. Tasmania replaces the weekend day instead.
  • Weekend Anzac Day. States split three ways, shown in the table below.
  • Part-days and local days. South Australia and the NT have Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve from 7pm to midnight, and Queensland has Christmas Eve from 6pm. Show days, cups and regattas apply only where they are declared.
Anzac Day on a weekendSat 25 Apr 2026Sun 25 Apr 2027
NSW (special declaration), WA, ACTSaturday + Monday 27Sunday + Monday 26
QLD, NTSaturday onlyMonday 26 only
VIC, SA, TASSaturday onlySunday only

Getting the day right matters: for self-care, the public holiday price limit is about 2.2 times the weekday daytime limit. To price a whole shift, including one that runs into a public holiday, use the NDIS Shift Price Calculator. In Rostery, the right time-band item is chosen for every shift automatically when it is rostered and invoiced.

Questions people ask

Is Easter Saturday an NDIS public holiday?

In most places, yes. The NDIS Pricing Schedule names Good Friday and Easter Monday, and also counts any other day declared a public holiday in the state or territory where the support is delivered. Easter Saturday is a declared public holiday in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the ACT and the NT. It is not one in Western Australia or Tasmania. Easter Sunday is a public holiday everywhere except Tasmania.

Do show days, cups and other local holidays count?

Yes, where they are declared public holidays. The Pricing Schedule counts any day or part-day declared a public holiday within the state or territory where the support is delivered. A local show day or cup day is a public holiday only in the district it is declared for, so it changes the price only for supports delivered there. Local event days and bank holidays that are not declared public holidays do not count.

What happens when a public holiday falls on a weekend?

It depends on the state. For Christmas Day and Boxing Day, most states keep the weekend day and add a weekday. Tasmania replaces the weekend day instead, so Saturday 26 December 2026 is not a Tasmanian public holiday. For Anzac Day on a weekend, NSW (by special declaration for 2026 and 2027), WA and the ACT add the Monday; Queensland and the NT list Monday 26 April 2027 instead of the Sunday; Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania add nothing. For NDIS pricing, the days the Pricing Schedule names by date (1 and 26 January, 25 April, 25 and 26 December, plus Good Friday and Easter Monday) are public holidays in every state, even where the state moves its own holiday.

How do part-day public holidays work for NDIS supports?

South Australia and the NT have public holidays from 7pm to midnight on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, and Queensland from 6pm to midnight on Christmas Eve. The Pricing Schedule counts a declared part-day as a public holiday. It also says that where a support crosses between different times of day or days of week and is delivered by a single worker, the higher of the amounts applies to the whole support. Read together, a single-worker shift that runs into the declared hours is priced at the public holiday amount for its whole length; record the approach in your service agreement.

What is the NDIS public holiday price for personal care?

For Assistance With Self-Care Activities - Standard - Public Holiday (01_012_0107_1_1), the 2026-27 price limit is $163.46 an hour nationally, $228.84 in remote areas and $245.19 in very remote areas. That is about 2.2 times the weekday daytime limit of $73.58. These are maximums: you can charge less, never more.

Why are some dates marked as expected?

Two dates were not yet confirmed when this list was checked: the Friday before the 2027 AFL Grand Final in Victoria, which depends on the AFL fixture, and the 2027 regional King’s Birthday in Karratha and Port Hedland, which each council sets. Queensland’s 2027 district show holidays and some 2027 NSW local holidays were not yet published, so they are not listed.
