Straight-line maths on your figures. Newer plans release funding in funding periods, usually 3 months; this paces the whole plan.

Pacing an NDIS budget

Every NDIS plan sets a total for each support budget and category, and a start and end date. The question providers and participants ask most is simple: at the rate we are spending, will it last? This calculator answers it with straight-line maths on your own figures.

What the result tells you

  • Runs out early means the current weekly spend uses the budget more than a week before the plan ends. The weekly figure shows what to bring it down to.
  • On track means the money lasts to within a week of the plan end date.
  • Underspending means money would be left over. Unused funding doesn’t roll over to a new plan, so it may be worth reviewing whether the participant is getting the supports they need.

Funding periods

Newer plans release funding in funding periods, usually 3 months. Unused funding rolls over to the next period in the same plan, but claims can’t be paid once the current period’s funding is used. A plan that is on track overall can still hit a period limit if spending is lumpy, so check the period amounts in the plan as well.

To price the supports themselves, use the NDIS Shift Price Calculator or look up an item in the NDIS Price Guide. Rostery tracks each participant’s funding as shifts are delivered and invoiced.

Questions people ask

What happens to unspent NDIS funding at the end of a plan?

The NDIS says funding must be spent within the current plan and any unused funding won’t roll over to a new plan. The exception is a plan continuation: if the NDIA continues a plan instead of reassessing it, unspent funding from the previous plan can still be used and stays in the continued plan.

What are funding periods?

New NDIS plans release each funding component (core, capacity building, capital or recurring) in funding periods, usually 3 months. They don’t change the total in the plan, only when it can be used. Funding not used in one period rolls over to the next period in the same plan, but the NDIA can’t pay claims once a period’s funding is used up.

Can I move money between core support categories?

Usually, yes. Core supports funding is flexible, so the total can be used across and within its support categories unless the plan says a support is stated. Funding can’t be moved between support budgets, and you can’t spend more than the total.

Can capacity building funding be moved?

No. The NDIS says the funding in capacity building support categories is stated, so it can’t be moved between categories and has to be used for the supports described in the plan.

What if the budget is running out early?

Talk to the participant, their plan manager and any support coordinator about reducing or rescheduling supports. If needs have changed, the participant can ask the NDIA to change the plan. The NDIA may also check in if it notices funding being spent faster or slower than expected.

How is the weekly figure worked out?

The remaining budget divided by the weeks left from today to the plan end date, counting the end date as the plan’s last day. It is straight-line maths: it does not know about funding periods, price changes or supports booked ahead, so check it against real bookings.
