Which roster template to use
Pick the shape that matches how your team works. The weekly roster puts each worker on a row and each day in a column, which suits community and in-home teams. The SIL / 24-7 house roster turns that around: each row is a shift in the house (morning, afternoon, sleepover, active night) and you fill in who is on, so a vacant shift stands out. The fortnightly roster matches the SCHADS Award, which expects ordinary hours on a fortnightly roster posted two weeks ahead.
Rules worth building into every roster
- 10 hours between shifts (clause 25.4), or 8 by agreement next to a sleepover.
- 2 full days off a week, or 4 a fortnight, for employees other than casuals (clause 25.3).
- Seven days’ notice of a roster change, apart from agreed swaps and cover for illness or emergencies (clause 25.5).
- Sleepovers run 8 continuous hours (clause 25.7). Work during a sleepover is paid at the overtime rate, with a minimum of one hour.
Work out what each shift costs with the SCHADS pay calculator. Rostery builds rosters like these with the award, qualifications and client preferences checked as you drag shifts.

Questions people ask
How far in advance does a SCHADS roster have to be posted?
Clause 25.5 of the SCHADS Award says ordinary hours are shown on a fortnightly roster, posted where employees can easily see it at least two weeks before the roster period starts. Rosters can be shared by phone, email or any electronic means, and the employer does not have to display a roster for casual or relieving staff.
How much notice is needed to change a roster?
Seven days, under clause 25.5(d) of the SCHADS Award. A roster can be changed at any time for a shift swap the employee asks for and the employer agrees to, or to cover another employee who is absent through illness or an emergency.
What is the minimum break between shifts?
Clause 25.4 of the SCHADS Award gives at least 10 hours between the end of one shift and the start of the next. By agreement it can be 8 hours for the shift just before or just after a sleepover. The weekly and fortnightly templates flag any break under 10 hours.
How long is a sleepover?
Under the SCHADS Award (clause 25.7) a sleepover is a continuous 8-hour span. For NDIS pricing, the Pricing Schedule defines a night-time sleepover as support that starts before midnight, finishes after it, runs for 8 hours or more, and lets the worker sleep when not providing support.
Is my roster saved anywhere?
No. Everything stays in your browser and is gone when you close the page. Download the CSV or print the roster to keep it. The CSV opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.
